Tottenham Hotspur made a dramatic change in the 17th minute of their Champions League last-16 first leg against Atletico Madrid, removing goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky after a disastrous opening spell.
The 22-year-old Czech Republic international had a difficult start, and interim head coach Igor Tudor quickly decided to replace him with Guglielmo Vicario.
Kinsky’s first major error came in the sixth minute. He slipped while attempting to deal with the ball, allowing Marcos Llorente to take advantage and score the opening goal.
Just eight minutes later, Atletico doubled their lead when Antoine Griezmann found the net, leaving Tottenham already facing a serious uphill battle early in the match.
The third goal leads to rapid substitution
The situation worsened in the 15th minute when Kinsky made another costly mistake. His pass went directly to Julian Alvarez, who converted easily to make it 3-0 for the hosts.
The goalkeeper reacted with his head in his hands as Atletico surged into a commanding lead. Less than two minutes later, Tudor decided to make a change.
Vicario came on in place of Kinsky, while the young goalkeeper headed straight down the tunnel after leaving the pitch.
Observers at the stadium noted that Tudor did not acknowledge Kinsky as he departed the field.
Atletico continue to dominate the first half
Vicario’s introduction did not immediately stop Atletico’s momentum. The Italian goalkeeper conceded just five minutes after entering the match.
By the 22nd minute, the Spanish side had raced into a 4-0 advantage, putting Tottenham in a desperate position.
Pedro Porro managed to pull one goal back before the break, offering a brief response from the visitors.
However, Atletico ultimately secured a 5-2 victory, leaving Spurs with a major challenge to overturn the deficit in the second leg on 18 March.
Reaction and criticism after the decision
BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty, who attended the match, said he was unsure he had ever seen anything similar after the sequence of Tottenham mistakes and the early substitution.
BBC Sport reporter Elizabeth Conway noted that Kinsky received encouragement from teammates Kevin Danso, Cristian Romero, and Pedro Porro as he left the pitch.
Former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, described the moment as extremely difficult for the young player and suggested the decision could be damaging.
Romero was seen speaking to Tudor shortly before the substitution, but the manager later confirmed the call was entirely his own, saying it was made with the aim of helping the team.
