Day 8 in Indian Wells locked in the quarterfinal lineup, and it’s now about who can actually win it.
Carlos Alcaraz put in another ruthless set of work to move past Casper Ruud; a first set that was basically a clinic, followed by a locked-in tiebreak to shut the door.
Cameron Norrie kept his desert run rolling with a composed win over qualifier Rinky Hijikata, setting up a clash with the World Number 1.
Then came the match of the day: Jack Draper outlasting Novak Djokovic in a 2-hour-37-minute epic to send the defending champion into the quarterfinals, while Daniil Medvedev handled Alex Michelsen with minimum fuss to complete the last eight.
Now the bracket is loaded: Alcaraz–Norrie, Draper–Medvedev, Fils–Zverev, and Tien–Sinner. Here’s the full Day 8 recap, key moments, and highlights.

Key Matches

(1) Carlos Alcaraz def. (13) Casper Ruud 6-1, 7-6(2)
Alcaraz, the World No. 1 and two-time champion, delivered a masterful display to reach his fifth straight Indian Wells quarterfinal.
He dominated the opening set with blistering groundstrokes, clever variation, and relentless movement, making Ruud cover the court endlessly. Ruud improved in the second but couldn’t break through, as Alcaraz held firm in the tiebreak.
“The first set was unplayable… I’m really happy about playing that kind of level, “Alcaraz said, noting he could enjoy points while staying focused.
The 91-minute win extended his unbeaten streak in 2026 to 15 matches (AO and Doha titles) and improved his H2H record to 6-1 vs Ruud.
Next: vs Cameron Norrie (the last player besides Sinner to beat him, in Paris 2025).
(27) Cameron Norrie def. Rinky Hijikata (Q) 6-4, 6-2
Norrie, the 2021 champion, continued his strong desert form with a straightforward straight-sets win over the Australian qualifier.
He controlled rallies efficiently, breaking serve decisively to reach his fifth Masters 1000 quarterfinal (fourth at Indian Wells), and the Brit plays super-solid tennis backed by a huge engine (you rarely see him look tired).
(3) Novak Djokovic def. by (14) Jack Draper 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5)
One of the matches of the season so far, as defending champion Draper outstretched five-time titlist Djokovic in a gruelling 2-hour-37-minute thriller.
Draper overcame Djokovic’s early edge, trading heavy baseline rallies and improving as the match wore on. A highlight was Djokovic’s 26-shot rally in the decider’s opening game (earning a standing ovation; Djokovic ended on his back, gasping, and later said it cost him gas and led to a break).
Draper failed to serve out at 5-4 in the third but regrouped to win the tiebreak. “Won through determination… regrouped really well,” Draper said, emotional about facing his childhood idol post-arm injury layoff.
Djokovic (bitter but proud): ” So close… unfortunate few mistakes… he played at a great level.”
(11) Daniil Medvedev def. Alex Michelsen 6-2, 6-4
Medvedev advanced efficiently in straight sets, overpowering the young American. He dictated with his return game and consistency to reach the quarters, and he seems to like the conditions in Indian Wells, as he plays much more proactively here.
