Aston Villa secured a narrow but valuable 1-0 win over Lille in the first leg of their Europa League tie, with Ollie Watkins’ second-half header the difference in France.
Lille started brightly in front of a vocal home crowd and looked the more threatening side during the early stages.
Villa gradually settled after the initial pressure and began to threaten on the counter. Watkins raced into the penalty area midway through the first half and forced a corner after a strong run, while Morgan Rogers later fired a shot across goal that drifted harmlessly wide.
Lille’s best opportunity before the interval came from distance when Gabriel Gudmundsson struck a dipping effort that required a sharp save from Emiliano Martinez. Pau Torres reacted quickly to clear the loose ball and prevent any follow-up attempt.
Despite the lively tempo, neither side managed to test the goalkeepers consistently and the teams went into the break level after a competitive but tight first half.
Watkins breaks the deadlock
The breakthrough arrived just after the hour mark with a moment of clinical finishing from Villa. Ezri Konsa launched a long pass forward and Emiliano Buendia did well to challenge for the aerial ball against Chancel Mbemba.
The flick-on dropped kindly for Watkins, who nodded the ball over goalkeeper Ozer to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The goal shifted the momentum of the match as Lille pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Olivier Giroud forced a routine save from Martinez with a header shortly afterwards, while Villa continued to look dangerous when breaking.
Watkins almost doubled the lead minutes later when he raced through on goal after being released by Douglas Luiz. The striker pushed the ball past the goalkeeper but collided with him while trying to round the challenge, with the referee waving away Villa’s penalty appeals.
Lille again increased their urgency in the final stages. Fernandez-Pardo produced a curling effort that Martinez pushed away with a diving save, and substitute Correia later poked an effort towards goal during a crowded scramble inside the penalty area.
There was one final moment of controversy deep into stoppage time when Lille appealed for a penalty after Fernandez-Pardo tangled with Konsa inside the area. The referee dismissed the claims, allowing Villa to hold on.
