I designed and launched my own FIT File Analyzer tool. Testing power meters requires more than just recording a ride. You need to record the same ride with multiple devices, compare power outputs across brands, analyze differences during sprints, steady efforts, and climbs, and evaluate metrics such as Mean Maximal Power (MMP). Most importantly, the results must be presented clearly and visually.
What the FIT File Analyzer Does
The FIT File Analyzer is a web-based tool built specifically for comparing up to four cycling FIT files side by side. The tool overlays all data on synchronized charts, so differences become immediately visible. Currently, the analyzer includes four main charts:
- Power – compare power output across devices
- Cadence – analyze pedaling consistency
- Heart Rate – verify HR sensor accuracy
- Critical Power (MMP) – compare mean maximal power curves
Each chart supports zooming, allowing you to focus on specific intervals or efforts. Every uploaded file can be adjusted independently. You can:
- Apply time offsets to align devices that started recording at different times
- Trim start or end times to isolate specific segments of a ride
- Toggle visibility to compare only selected files
- Designate a baseline device for percentage comparisons
These controls make it easy to synchronize recordings and focus on the exact efforts you want to analyze.
The tool also generates a detailed comparison table that summarizes the data. It shows:
- Average and maximum power differences
- MMP values at key durations (10s, 20s, 30s, 5min, 8min, 20min, 60min)
- Percentage differences from your chosen baseline
- Plain-language summaries of device differences
Additional Features
The analyzer also includes several quality-of-life features:
- Custom power meter names so you can replace filenames with labels like “Garmin Rally” or “Favero Assioma”
- Sample data so you can test the tool immediately
- Responsive design that works on desktop, tablet, and mobile (although I highly recommend using it on desktop)
- Local processing only, so your FIT files never leave your device
- Chart export so you can download visualizations as PNG images for reports or social media
Try It Yourself
The FIT File Analyzer is available at analyzer.cyclistshub.com. If you don’t have FIT files ready, the tool includes sample data from a real activity. Of course, I am open to your suggestions on how to improve, so don’t hesitate to contact me.
