Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor could potentially headline just weeks after the White House card.
It’s been almost five full years since Conor McGregor appeared inside the UFC Octagon, stemming from a leg injury suffered in his trilogy with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. McGregor was supposed to make his highly anticipated return to fighting at UFC 303 in 2024, before withdrawing due to an injury.
Two years later, and McGregor remains without a fight, at least one announced publicly, after his hopes for a return at the UFC’s upcoming White House card were dismissed. UFC CEO Dana White recently announced that UFC Freedom 250 on the White House lawn will feature a lightweight title headliner between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje.
Many expected McGregor to potentially create a firestorm on social media in protest of the UFC’s matchmaking decisions, similar to Jon Jones’ recent calls for a UFC release after being left off of the White House event. But according to MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, it might be a blessing in disguise for McGregor after an encouraging meeting with UFC brass.
Conor McGregor’s reported meeting with UFC officials seemingly confirmed after White House snub
Helwani recently reported that McGregor met with UFC officials, including White, on Monday. As of this writing, it’s uncertain whether or not the meeting was remote or in-person at the UFC’s headquarters in Las Vegas.
Regardless, McGregor seemed to confirm Helwani’s reports and hinted that an announcement regarding his comeback fight could be imminent.
McGregor shared an encouraging message to his fans in a recent post on X.
“Precision beats power, and timing beats speed!” McGregor posted.
McGregor’s long-linked opponent, Michael Chandler, is set to fight on the White House card against Mauricio Ruffy. As of this writing, it’s uncertain whether or not McGregor will return to the Octagon at lightweight or welterweight for his planned comeback.
