On Wednesday evening, the Blue Jays fell 8-1 to the New York Yankees. That was followed up by an 8-5 defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies, bringing their Spring Training record to 7-10-2. Let’s take a look at what went on in this game.
The Magician strikes first 💪
The Jays showed some fight beginning in the top of the fourth. With a runner on third, Daulton Varsho grounded out, but drove in Heineman to make it 8-2. Josh Kasevich hit his second double of Spring to bring in Leo Jiménez to make it 8-3.

Daulton Varsho’s OPS this Spring: 1.147 👀
Moving to the top of the fifth, the Blue Jays had runners on first and second with Varsho at the plate. He hit an opposite-field double off the wall at 104.1 mph to drive in both runners to make it 8-5.
Unfortunately, that was the final time the Jays had a runner in scoring position. They came close to scoring in the top of the eighth, as Yohendrick Piñango hit a single that deflected off the second baseman, but Jonatan Clase was thrown out at home trying to score. There was no bottom of the eighth, nor a ninth inning, as the game went into a rain delay and never resumed
Takeaways…
Just like last Spring Training, Daulton Varsho is finding success before the start of the 2026 season. His double was his fourth of Spring Training, as he’s now batting .393 with an OPS of 1.147. Hopefully he can have a healthy season and hit like he did in 2025.
Tyler Heineman had a great game, going 2-2 with a walk, a triple, and a home run. The Blue Jays’ backup catcher was the lone batter with a two-hit day, while Josh Kasevich had the team’s other extra-base hit. Davis Schneider, Leo Jiménez, Jonatan Clase, Yohendrick Piñango, Riley Tirotta, and Josh Rivera all hit singles.
CJ Van Eyk had a tough outing, giving up six earned runs over two and one-third innings. Rule 5 selectee Angel Bastardo followed him, giving up two earned runs in two thirds of an inning. The good news is the others in the bullpen had solid games.
Braydon Fisher followed Bastardo, and he walked and struck out a batter in a scoreless inning. As has been the case for the majority of Spring Training, Mason Fluharty followed Fisher, pitching a perfect inning with two strikeouts. Jesse Hahn pitched the final two innings before the rain delay.
The Blue Jays are back in action on Friday, as they host the Minnesota Twins in Dunedin at 1:07 PM ET. Cody Ponce will make the start.
