The Los Angeles Dodgers picked up where they left off following their rest day, taking a 9-5 win over the Cincinnati Reds Thursday.
The Dodgers dropped a game to the Reds last Thursday, falling short in a thrilling 14-13 competition.
Non-roster invitee Cole Irvin got the ball for the Dodgers, making his fourth appearance of the spring for his new team. He allowed one earned run and struck out a singular batter during his two-inning outing.
The Dodgers gave Irvin an early lead to work with, striking first in the bottom of the first inning. Teoscar Hernandez started the party with a one-run double, and Freddie Freeman hit a single to score him shortly after. Santiago Espinal hit a two-run double to to make the score 4-0 by the end of the first inning.
Cincinnati didn’t go down without a fight, attempting to claw their way back in the top of the third. Reece Hinds logged an RBI walk and Noelvi Marte followed it up with an RBI single. The last run of the inning scored via wild pitch.
Max Muncy quickly extended the Dodgers’ lead once again, hitting his second homer of the spring — a two-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the third inning.
Teoscar Hernandez continued his fantastic outing two innings later, hitting a two-run shot of his own to give LA an 8-3 lead.
The Reds made up some more ground on the Dodgers in the seventh inning, with Carlos Jorge hitting an RBI double and P.J. Huggins scoring him with a groundout. Kyle Nevin hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning, though, restoring a four-run lead for the Dodgers.
Antonio Knowles took over for Antoine Kelly and got out of a jam for a scoreless eighth inning, then came back out for the ninth and closed the game to secure the Dodgers’ win. Kyle Hurt and Paul Gervase both had solid showings on the pitching side, with Hurt recording three strikeouts in an inning pitched and Gervase logging 1.2 scoreless innings.
The Dodgers have now won three in a row, and will look to continue their streak against the Seattle Mariners on Friday.
