Packers May Be Contending With NFC Rival For Million Pass Rusher

General manager Brian Gutekunst and the Green Bay Packers could be on the cusp of pulling off a blockbuster trade to acquire a veteran pass rusher to drop opposite Micah Parsons in defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon’s front seven.

After trading Rashan Gary to the Dallas Cowboys, there’s a hole to be filled at a key position on defense, before the 2026 season kicks off.

Arizona Cardinals edge rusher Josh Sweat has reportedly requested a trade, and the Packers are a natural destination, given that some of his most productive seasons came while playing for Gannon, both in Philadelphia and in Arizona.

However, Sweat saw some success under Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, too, posting eight sacks as the driving force behind the defense powering a Super Bowl run, in 2024.

According to Easton Butler of Packer Report, Sweat has asked to be traded, and both the Eagles and Packers are showing some interest in pulling off a deal for him.

“Cardinals EDGE Josh Sweat has requested a trade this week, per a source. The Packers and Eagles are both reportedly interested in him,” Butler reports.

Whether Green Bay can outmaneuver the Eagles for his services remains to be seen, but landing a 12-sack producer like Sweat would immediately signal that the Packers are serious about trying to win a Super Bowl in the immediate future, and in beating one of the conference’s most dominant franchises to the punch for Sweat.
