Dominik Mysterio Reflects On Beating John Cena In WWE Icon’s Last PPV Match

Dominik Mysterio is far younger than many of his WWE colleagues, but the multi-generation star has some major accolades to his name.

At Survivor Series 2025, Mysterio won the Intercontinental Title from John Cena in Cena’s final match at a WWE pay-per-view event.

On a recent edition of the “Collection with Brad Gilmore” podcast, Mysterio reflected on having such a massive win to his name. He said,

“Super, super surreal. Not only was it John Cena’s last PLE, last Survivor Series, it was the first wrestling event ever held at Petco Park in San Diego. Bro, I’m born and raised in San Diego. I’ve gone to Padres games my whole life. I lived there. Did a bunch of sh*t I shouldn’t have done in downtown San Diego as well, but, got some great stories I can’t tell.”

For Mysterio, defeating Cena in a place with so much meaning to him meant everything to the reigning AAA Mega Champion. He said,

“Walking in, in the city where I’m from, walking out as a double champion, beating John Cena, that sh*t’s insane. You can’t write it. Stuff like that, it writes itself. It’s like a fairytale ending for me.”

Mysterio’s win wouldn’t just mark the end of Cena’s time on pay-per-view, but also mark the end of John’s final championship reign.

Cena’s final match would come the following month, when he would lose to GUNTHER via submission at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.
