Alcaraz could face Fonseca in first match

The Miami Open draw is out, and Monday afternoon’s ceremony resulted in a potential second-round showdown between Carlos Alcaraz and Joao Fonseca. That will come to fruition if Fonseca defeats Fabian Marozsan in the Brazilian’s opening match.

Alcaraz’s possible path to the final also includes Sebastian Korda in round three, Karen Khachanov in the last 16, Taylor Fritz in the quarters, and either Lorenzo Musetti, Alex de Minaur, Alexander Bublik, or Tommy Paul in the semis. The top-ranked Spaniard is coming off a semifinal showing in Indian Wells, where he fell to eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev has a favorable draw in Miami, where he will avoid Jannik Sinner at least until the semifinals and Alcaraz until the championship match. Sinner defeated Medvedev 7-6(6), 7-6(4) in the Indian Wells final on Sunday. The bottom half of the Miami bracket also features Alexander Zverev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton, and defending champion Jakub Mensik.

In addition to Fonseca vs. Marozsan, first-round matchups to watch are Ethan Quinn vs. Hubert Hurkacz, Denis Shapovalov vs. Botic van de Zandschulp, Grigor Dimitrov vs. Raphael Collington, and Gabriel Diallo vs. Yibing Wu.
