Andrew Abbott had a very tough day on the mound as he allowed eight runs in 2.0 innings and failed to record an out in two different innings. The Cincinnati Reds weren’t able to recover from that one on the day as they lost 11-6 to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday evening.
The Highlights
After the Reds got a leadoff single but failed to do anything with it in the top of the 1st, the Diamondbacks had a bit more luck in their half of the inning. Jordan Laylar would single to start the bottom of the frame, took third base on a single that followed his own, and then he scored on a sacrifice fly from Tim Tawa to put Arizona in the lead.
Two innings later the home team would get to Answer Abbott again. Two straight singles began the inning once again, but this time the second one plated a run. James McCann then hit a 2-run home run to make it 4-0. The Reds lefty then walked the next batter and was then removed from the game and replaced by minor league pitcher Jimmy Romano. He would give up an RBI double to Ryan Waldschmidt as the Diamondbacks tacked on another run. Another run would come in on a single by A.J. Vukovich later in the inning before the inning came to an end with Arizona up 6-0.
The top of the 4th inning saw JJ Bleday lead off with a double, but he was then picked off. That worked against the Reds because later in the at-bat Nathaniel Lowe hit a 437-foot home run.
Andrew Abbott returned to the mound for the 4th inning. Things did not get any better for him as he gave up a leadoff single that was then followed by a walk and an RBI double. He was then pulled from the game. Hagen Danner took over and immediately gave up a 3-run home run as the lead for Arizona grew to 10-1.
The Reds would get three runs back in the top of the 5th inning. Garrett Hampson led off with his second home run of the spring. JJ Bleday would then hit a 2-run home run with two outs to cap things off. Emilio Pagan would be the recipient of some poor luck when a 2-out error cost him a run in the bottom of the inning.
Carlos Jorge picked up a 1-out triple in the top of the 7th inning – his third triple of the spring despite not actually being in big league camp. He would score on a wild pitch a few seconds later. Cincinnati would get their final run of the game in the top of the 8th on a 426-foot solo home run by Rece Hinds.
