The UFC returns to the O2 Arena this Saturday, March 21, for a card that feels like a gift to the UK fight scene.
UFC Fight Night: Evloev vs. Murphy leans into high-stakes matchmaking, headlined by a featherweight clash that could easily be a championship fight.
Let’s take a look at the three most anticipated fights to follow this weekend:
UFC London Fights To Follow:
The Main Event: Movsar Evloev vs. Lerone Murphy
The headliner is a historic title eliminator between two of the most dangerous undefeated fighters in the world. The winner here is widely expected to be next in line for a shot at the champion, Alexander Volkanovski.
This fight is a rarity in the Octagon. Evloev and Murphy bring a combined record of 36-0-1 into the cage. That is the highest combined unbeaten record for a non-title fight in the history of the promotion. For Murphy, known as “The Miracle,” fighting in London is a homecoming. For Evloev, it is a chance to finally silence the doubters who say his wrestling-heavy style is too safe for a title shot.
It is a pure clash of styles. Evloev is a relentless chain-wrestler who averages nearly five takedowns every fifteen minutes. He relies on stifling top pressure to break his opponents. Murphy, however, is a knockout specialist with elite footwork and a recent highlight-reel win over Aaron Pico. Whether he is finishing a camp with new mma training gloves or sharpening his clinch work, Murphy needs to bring his A-game to the fight to find the chin of the Russian.
Co-Main Event: Luke Riley vs. Michael Aswell
The co-main event features two featherweight prospects who seem incapable of a boring fight. Many analysts are already circling this as the frontrunner for Fight of the Night.
Luke Riley enters with a perfect 12-0 record and a reputation as the next big thing in English MMA. He meets Michael Aswell Jr., a fighter who doesn’t believe in backing up. Aswell has recorded as many as nine point five six significant strikes per minute in past outings, a pace that few in the division can match.
Neither man typically looks to wrestle. This is expected to be a stand-up war where technical striking meets sheer volume. Riley is praised for his devastating accuracy, but he will have to navigate a storm of strikes to get inside on Aswell.
Welterweight Feature: Michael Page vs. Sam Patterson
In what might be the most emotional fight on the card, former training partners Michael “Venom” Page and Sam Patterson square off in a welterweight bout.
Both fighters have been open about their reluctance to take this fight. Patterson used to be Page’s primary sparring partner because his six-foot-three frame and long reach perfectly mimicked Page’s own physical advantages. Page has expressed frustration at having to face a friend, but the business of the UFC rarely allows for sentiment.
Patterson is a “young beast” with four first-round finishes to his name. He is looking to take Page’s No. 13 ranking and catapult himself into the top tier of the division. For Page, this is a must-win to prove his unorthodox style still works against the new generation that knows his game inside and out.
