Day 3 of the 2026 Miami Open brought more rain, but not enough to totally derail play again as the round of 128 wrapped up at Hard Rock Stadium.
World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz handled business efficiently against Joao Fonseca, staying composed amid a lively crowd to move to 17-1 on the season.
Meanwhile, Stefanos Tsitsipas delivered a serving masterclass to upset fifth seed Alex de Minaur, extending his head-to-head edge dramatically.
The day also featured major upsets: rising American Ethan Quinn stunned 11th seed Casper Ruud in a tense tiebreak thriller, while Reilly Opelka powered through Jack Draper with his lethal serve dominating two tiebreaks. Q
A solid day for the Americans also saw Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Sebastian Korda advance smoothly. Here’s the full recap of the action.

Key Matches

Carlos Alcaraz (1) def. Joao Fonseca 6-4, 6-4
The World No. 1 handled the electric atmosphere and raucous Brazilian support with composure in their first meeting.
Alcaraz saved all break points, dominated with his first serve (80% points won), and controlled the court with speed and defence.
He improved to 17-1 on the season and praised Fonseca’s potential, but I thought it was fairly one-sided as Alcaraz has far too many tools in his locker, whereas Fonseca is purely about big forehands.

Next: vs. Sebastian Korda (who cruised 6-0, 6-3 over Camilo Ugo Carabelli).
Stefanos Tsitsipas def. Alex de Minaur (5) 6-3, 7-6(3)
A bit of an upset here. I hadn’t realised until yesterday just how one-sided this match-up was, and Tsitsipas extended his dominance to 12-1.
He delivered a sharp, serving masterclass (98% first-serve points won, saved both break points). Definitely one of his best performances of recent memory, and he advances to face Arthur Fils (who beat Darwin Blanch 6-2, 6-3).
Ethan Quinn def. Casper Ruud (11) 6-4, 7-6(7)
Another upset here for Quinn, fresh off beating Hubert Hurkacz in R1 and a Challenger title in Phoenix, he saved seven set points in the second-set tiebreak to defeat former finalist Casper Ruud. He out-aced the Norwegian and converted all break chances in a 1-hour-52-minute battle. This marks his first Masters 1000 third round and Ruud’s ranking is tumbling which won’t help with his spot in the draw on his preferred clay.
Reilly Opelka def. Jack Draper (25) 7-6(3), 7-6(0)
Opelka’s massive serve (25+ aces in prior rounds) shone again in two tight tiebreaks. He credited new coach Craig Boynton (ex-Isner/Hurkacz) for technical tweaks that have boosted his motion and return game. Opelka’s averaging 25.4 aces per match in 2026, hard to find a way through when the surface works in his favour.
Other Matches of Note
- Matteo Berrettini def. Alexander Bublik (10) 6-4, 6-4. Solid straight-sets win for the Italian over the seeded Kazakh.
- Martin Landaluce (Q) def. Luciano Darderi (17) 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-4. The young Spaniard continued his strong run with another upset over a seeded player.
- Raphael Collignon def. Flavio Cobolli (13) 7-5, 6-3. Building on his R1 heroics (saving match point vs. Dimitrov), Collignon took down another seed.
- Taylor Fritz (6) def. Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3. Fritz recovered after dropping the second set to advance.
- Jiri Lehecka (21) def. Moise Kouame (WC) 6-2, 7-5. The seed ended the 17-year-old French wild card’s historic run (first ATP win born 2009+ in R1).
