By the end of Sunday’s NCAA Tournament action, the field will be trimmed to 16 teams as the first weekend concludes with eight second-round games. Among the most compelling matchups is No. 2 seed Iowa State facing No. 7 seed Kentucky in St. Louis.
The Cyclones cruised past No. 15 seed Tennessee State in the first round, but an ankle injury to star forward Joshua Jefferson cast a shadow over the 108-74 win. His status will be a key storyline against a Kentucky team riding momentum after a thrilling overtime victory over Santa Clara.
Elsewhere, No. 4 seed Alabama and No. 5 seed Texas Tech — both popular upset picks in the first round — advanced and will meet in the second round. Another marquee matchup features No. 1 seed Arizona against No. 9 seed Utah State.
Arizona has reached three Sweet 16s in the past four seasons under coach Tommy Lloyd. To make it four in five years, the Wildcats must handle a high-powered Utah State team that rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit to beat Villanova on Friday.
Tracking the teams as they move on only adds to the fun and you’ll want to print out a March Madness bracket and begin making picks and following teams from the first round to the final game in Indianapolis.
