Carlos Adames vs. Austin Williams fight recap

Carlos Adames (25-1-1, 18 KOs) showed that experience matters in his unanimous decision win over Austin Williams (20-2, 13 KOs).

Scores were 118-108 and 117-109 (x2). Adames remains the WBC middleweight world champion with the victory. He was promoted to full titlist in 2024 after Jermall Charlo was stripped of the title. This was Adames’s third defence of the belt.

Both men connected on a number of straight punches in the opening round. Things took a dramatic turn in the second, however, as Williams was dropped by two straight rights. Adames was unable to get the finish despite his opponent being on shaky legs.

Williams did not hesitate in throwing power punches, but Adames was the more accurate of the two. The reigning champion was able to pick the right moments to land his hardest shots. Both men swung wildly at each other with over two minutes to go in round six. Williams came out worse during the exchange and looked exhausted for the remainder of the sixth.

Adames had little trouble picking his opponent apart. He was almost always pressing forward. Williams had success landing the jab, but was unable to keep the champion off of him. He briefly backed Adames up early in round 10 with power shots to the head, but the Dominican quickly recovered and went back to dominating proceedings.

Adames was deducted a point in round 12 after landing his second clear low blow of the fight. It had little impact on the final outcome of the fight. Williams tried going for broke, but was too exhausted and too hurt to turn things around. Adames, who has spent far more time in the amateurs than Williams and has fought at a higher level, clearly showed the difference in ability between the two. It came as no surprise that Adames ultimately won via dominant unanimous decision.
