Zary Hit Lands A.J. Greer a Hearing — But Is It Enough?

Zary Hit Lands A.J. Greer a Hearing — But Is It Enough?

As per a statement released by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, “Florida’s A.J. Greer will have a hearing tomorrow for boarding Calgary’s Connor Zary.” The news comes less than 24 hours after Greer ran Zary into the boards with a hit across the numbers. Zary left the game under his own power but didn’t return.

It was not made clear by the NHL DoPS whether the hearing was in person or over the phone. That said, The Athletic’s Chris Johnston is reporting that the hearing will not be in person.

Because it’s over the phone, the most Greer will get is five games.

Like the Radko Gudas knee-on-knee hit, the lack of time about to be handed out will not sit well with fans. Most are already saying this should be well beyond a five-game suspension, assuming Greer even gets that many games. The hit was labeled as dirty and an intent to injure by most analysts who watched the footage. There was no reason to do what Greer did on the play, and that alone suggests the NHL DoPS is going to be criticized for going far too light.
