Starfleet Academy Cancelled After Two Seasons

Becky Lynch’s run in the Star Trek universe already has an end date — because the show itself is officially wrapping up after its next season.

According to Variety on March 23, 2026, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will conclude with its upcoming second season, despite only just debuting earlier this year: “‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ will end with its upcoming second season.”

The series was originally picked up by Paramount+ in 2023, with confidence high enough that it was renewed for Season 2 before the first season even aired. That first season premiered in January 2026 and ran through March 12, while the second season has already finished production — so the end is pretty much in sight. Paramount+ and CBS Studios addressed the decision in a joint statement, pointing out their pride in the project and what it accomplished during its run.

“We’re incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ to life.”

They also noted how the series contributed to the broader franchise, introducing new characters while still honoring the legacy of Star Trek. And while the show is ending, the companies made it clear they’re still looking forward to delivering its final chapter.

“The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the ‘Star Trek’ universe in exciting new ways. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series.”

This, unfortunately, also confirms Becky Lynch’s role in the show, where she portrayed Lieutenant Mackenzie Ya, a member of the bridge crew aboard the U.S.S. Athena — a role that placed her directly in the action rather than as a background cameo.

Despite strong critical reception — including an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes — the show struggled to find a large audience. Across its 10-episode first season, it failed to crack the Nielsen Top 10 streaming charts, which likely played a major role in the decision.

The series itself is set in the 32nd century following the events of Star Trek: Discovery, focusing on the first class of cadets and instructors at a newly re-established Starfleet Academy, with a cast that includes Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard, and Zoë Steiner, alongside veterans like Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, and Robert Picardo. Showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau also reflected on the experience, the bigger vision behind the project and its connection to the franchise’s core themes.

“Whether you’re working on ‘Star Trek’ or part of the marvel that is ‘Star Trek’ fandom… the joy comes from adventuring across boundaries of time, space, and the humanly possible in service to Roddenberry’s transformative vision of the future. That incomparable vision was fueled by an inexhaustible optimism… ‘Star Trek’ places its bet on the best in human nature.”

So in the end, Becky Lynch’s move into sci-fi came with a strong start, but it won’t be a long run. With Season 2 already completed and confirmed as the final chapter, her time aboard the U.S.S. Athena is officially limited.

Do you think Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ending after two seasons is justified based on viewership, or should it have been given more time to grow? Drop your thoughts below and leave your feedback
