IU basketball is hiring Louisville assistant coach Thomas Carr – Inside the Hall

University of Louisville assistant coach Thomas Carr is joining the IU basketball staff as an assistant coach under Darian DeVries, Inside the Hall has confirmed.

Carr will become IU’s fifth assistant coach, joining Kenny Johnson, Rod Clark, Nick Norton and Drew Adams.

College basketball staffs are permitted to have five assistant coaches and IU’s fifth assistant spot was unfilled last season, but will now be occupied by Carr.

Carr spent the last two seasons on Pat Kelsey’s staff at Louisville, and prior to that, he was with Kelsey for two seasons at College of Charleston from 2022 through 2024.

According to his University of Louisville bio, Carr was named to Silver Waves Media’s 2026 100 Most Impactful High Major Assistants List in January of 2026.

Prior to working at the College of Charleston, Carr was Athletics Director at Word of God Christian in Raleigh, North Carolina from 2020 through 2022 and also worked with the Team Loaded NC program, which plays on the adidas 3SSB circuit.

Carr was also a member of Kevin Keatts’ staff at North Carolina State as director of operations from 2017 through 2019 and was an assistant coach under Keatts at UNC Wilmington from 2014 through 2017.

His first assistant coaching job at the Division I level came at East Tennessee State in the 2013-2014 season.

During the 2012-13 season, Carr was the head coach at Washington High School in Danville, Virginia.

Carr’s first coaching job was at Chipola College in the 2009-2010 season and he also worked under Keatts at Hargrave Military Academy from 2010 through 2012.

He played collegiately at Division III Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, North Carolina, from 2006 through 2008. Carr earned a degree in sports management.

Carr played high school basketball at St. John’s Jesuit in Toledo, Ohio and finished his prep career at Hargrave Military Academy. He is a native of Westwood, New Jersey.
