Terrance McKinney knows he has to make some changes.
McKinney is known for his quick finishes, but he knows that when he hurts opponents, he rushes too much, which puts him in a bad spot. So, after his last loss to Chris Duncan, in a fight, McKinney was close to finishing his opponent, he sat down with his coaches and promised to be more patient.
McKinney will get a chance to prove that when he takes on Kyle Nelson at UFC Seattle in an intriguing lightweight scrap.
“It wouldn’t have mattered who I fought; I would have said yes,” McKinney said on Just Scrap Radio on BJPENN.com. “Especially on the Seattle card. … All my people are coming, I’m just excited, it’s been a long time since I was able to fight close to home, so I’m excited to see the turnout and feel the crowd energy.”
Although McKinney didn’t care who his opponent would be at UFC Seattle, he is excited that it’s Kyle Nelson. Terrance McKinney believes it will be a fun fight, but he also thinks he has some clear advantages.
“I have the reach advantage, I have the speed advantage,” McKinney said. “I just can’t go wild if I hurt him because he has power, too. Like I said, just listen to my coaches and stick to the game plan this fight. I know I have plenty of tools to win, and it’s about actually using them and taking my time. That is the main goal. Don’t rush it, pretty much one or two punches, and good things are going to happen if I take my time.”
With McKinney ready to take his time, he’s prepared to go all three rounds. However, McKinney is confident he will get a stoppage win over Nelson at UFC Seattle.
“I’m ready to go the distance and do it for my people in the Pacific Northwest,” McKinney added. “Whether I get a first-round finish, or second or third, I have the tools to get the finish.”
If McKinney does finish Nelson, he believes he’s right back in the mix at lightweight and will end the year fighting a ranked opponent.
“I think this puts me in a good position. One more win and then a ranked fight,” McKinney concluded.
