The Toronto Maple Leafs entered the season with high expectations, but things have quickly unraveled. As losses piled up and the standings slipped away, attention has shifted from playoff hopes to potential offseason changes.
Now, with uncertainty surrounding the roster, trade speculation involving captain Auston Matthews is gaining traction.
Auston Matthews Trade Rumors Are Gaining Traction
Matthews’ season came to an abrupt end after he took a hit from Radko Gudas of the Anaheim Ducks. He underwent successful surgery last week to repair a Grade 3 MCL tear along with a quad contusion in his left leg. The injury not only sidelined him for the remainder of the season but also intensified questions about Toronto’s direction moving forward.
Even before the injury, Matthews’ name had surfaced in trade discussions around the deadline due to Toronto’s disappointing season. Some speculation suggested the Leafs could consider a full rebuild, potentially including moving their franchise centerpiece.
NHL insider Howard Berger added more fuel to the rumors, sharing that he received an unsolicited message from a trusted source claiming Matthews could be traded this summer.
“Got something for you,” began the text. “Your favorite captain will be traded, this summer, to one of three western teams: Anaheim, Los Angeles, or Utah. Mark it down. [Auston] won’t be back with the Leafs.”

“Nothing about this sent shockwaves through my system; nor should it yours,” Berger said.
After acting as sellers at the trade deadline for the first time in years, Toronto now appears likely to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Despite that, early indications from management point more toward a “soft retool” rather than a full rebuild.
The organization still has its core largely intact and hopes offseason additions, along with draft capital acquired in deals involving players such as Bobby McMann, Nic Roy, and Scott Laughton, can help the team bounce back quickly.
However, Berger expressed skepticism about that approach, suggesting, “It will never happen with the current ‘leadership’ group.” He pointed to the possibility that Matthews, Morgan Rielly, and potentially William Nylander could eventually be moved before the franchise truly turns a corner.

For now, the speculation remains just that: speculation. But with Matthews sidelined, the standings slipping away, and uncertainty surrounding the roster, the rumors are unlikely to fade anytime soon.
The Maple Leafs will next face the St. Louis Blues on Saturday as they continue playing out the remainder of a season that could lead to significant offseason decisions.
