Former British heavyweight contender David Price believes rising star Moses Itauma is on track to become the next dominant name in heavyweight boxing.
Speaking ahead of Itauma’s upcoming bout against Jermaine Franklin on March 28 at Co-op Live in Manchester, Price praised the young heavyweight’s talent, discipline, and mindset.
Price, who notably holds the distinction of being the only Englishman to defeat Tyson Fury in the ring during their amateur days, believes Itauma possesses all the tools needed to become a future star in the division.
Price: “Moses Itauma is the Future of Heavyweight Boxing”
Asked about Itauma’s potential and whether he can become the next big star in the division, Price was emphatic about the young fighter’s future.
“Moses Itauma is the future of heavyweight boxing. Not only does he have the talent, ability and the skill set, but he’s got the mentality and the attitude towards the sport that you need to succeed in boxing. He’s got a great mindset and a great way about him, which will carry him a long way.”
Price also highlighted the maturity Itauma has shown despite his young age.
“He seems very grounded. He’s still only 21, but he doesn’t seem to be in any way flash or outspoken. He just goes out there and gets the job done. Without a doubt, he’s got a long career ahead of him.”
Discipline and Mindset Key to Itauma’s Rise
Price believes Itauma’s professional approach could allow him to reach the top of the heavyweight division if he maintains his current work ethic.
“He’s a good, solid pro at such a young age. If he can keep that discipline and that mindset, there’s no reason why he can’t be something really special in our sport.”
The heavyweight division is currently filled with high-profile fighters, but Price sees Itauma emerging as the next major British star.
Comparing Itauma to Other British Heavyweights
During the interview, Price also compared Itauma to fellow British heavyweights such as Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley.
“Moses Itauma is obviously the standout name when it comes to the future of British heavyweights. You’ve got people like Daniel Dubois, who, while he can come back and do really good things again, he’s kind of like damaged goods now. So there’s an opening, if you will, for the next big British name.”
Price also praised Wardley’s recent success and current standing in the division.
“Although I think Fabio Wardley’s done fantastically well too. He’s the freshest fighter at the moment, and he’s a world champion, so he’s right up there. So after Moses Itauma, I’d say Fabio Wardley will be the second biggest name in British boxing in the near future.”
Itauma Looks to Continue Momentum in Manchester
With his fight against Franklin approaching, Itauma will have another opportunity to showcase why many believe he is one of the most exciting prospects in the heavyweight division.
If the young heavyweight continues his rise, Price’s prediction that Itauma could become the standout name in British heavyweight boxing may soon prove accurate.
