Maple Leafs’ Joseph Woll praises Jake McCabe following second straight win
For the 54th time through 73 games this season, the Toronto Maple Leafs were outshot, having to rely on goaltender Joseph Woll to make 40 saves in Wednesday’s 4-3 win against the New York Rangers. With the win, Woll improved his numbers to 15-13-6, a 3.16 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage through 35 starts.

“It’s nice to get back into the win column myself and good for us to string two together here,” Woll said post-game. “It’s definitely special to have my brother here.”

One of the Maple Leafs’ heart and soul players from the 2025-26 season has been defenceman Jake McCabe. On Wednesday night, McCabe scored his fourth goal of the season, added four blocked shots and played a team-high 24:54. Woll spoke on what it’s been like having the 32-year-old defenceman in front of him on a nightly basis.

“He’s unbelievable, he eats minutes for us, and I love having him back there playing in front of me,” Woll said. “Obviously, he blocks a lot of shots, and he’s a great presence out there. He always makes the right plays and plays top minutes against opposing teams’ top guys, so it’s been awesome.”

Much has been made of the Maple Leafs’ recent stretch of standing up for one another, after it was lacking at times throughout the early portions of the season. Woll touched on the differences he’s seen in the group since then.

“I think the biggest thing has been guys stepping up and watching out for other guys,” Woll said. “That’s the intensity you have to play with, and I just think we are playing a lot harder, and it’s awesome to see. Hopefully, we carry that momentum.”

Not only did Woll stop 40 shots in the win, but he also recorded his first career NHL point, picking up an assist on Dakota Joshua’s 10th goal of the season. Woll was asked post-game if he received the puck from his first point.

“I did not,” Woll said while laughing. “I didn’t even know I got an assist. I need to rewatch it and see how it all unfolded.”
