Game Day: Winnipeg Jets vs. Colorado Avalanche

It’s the first of two straight games against the Colorado Avalanche tonight for the Winnipeg Jets, almost like a mini playoff series, as they look to conclude their two-game homestand with a third consecutive win at Canada Life Centre.
Winnipeg got goals from across the lineup on Tuesday against Vegas. They made up for a slow start late in the first period when Josh Morrissey found Kyle Connor for a beautiful one-timer past Adin Hill to open the scoring with his 32nd of the year. Alex Iafallo added his 12th early in the second, followed shortly after by Cole Perfetti’s 10th, finishing off a nice saucer pass from Gabriel Vilardi to make it 3-0 for the home side. The Knights snapped Connor Hellebuyck’s shutout bid midway through the game, but Mark Scheifele completed his fourth career Gordie Howe hat trick with an empty-netter late in the game, making it 4-1 with his 32nd and tying Connor for the team lead in goals.

Winnipeg improved to 30-29-12 with its second consecutive win, going above .500 for the first time since early December. Hellebuyck bounced back with 26 saves.

Colorado, which holds first place in the league with a seven-point gap over Dallas, dominated the Penguins 6-2 on Tuesday night. Nathan MacKinnon continues another outstanding offensive season, scoring his 46th in the win, while Martin Necas found the back of the net twice (33, 34). Scott Wedgewood, who started between the pipes for the Avalanche, made 30 saves as Colorado improved to an outstanding 47-13-10 record.

These two clubs didn’t meet too long ago. The first of three meetings this month resulted in a 3-1 regulation win for Winnipeg at Canada Life Centre on March 14. The four-game season series remains tied 1-1, as Colorado won the first meeting 3-2 in regulation at Ball Arena on Dec. 19.

Colorado has yet to beat Winnipeg at Canada Life Centre since Feb. 24, 2023. The Jets are 4-0-0 at home against the Avalanche since then and have outscored them 13-3.
