Rangers let a future “£50m+ winger” leave Ibrox for £0

Rangers let a future “£50m+ winger” leave Ibrox for £0

Since Danny Rohl’s arrival at Ibrox back in October, only five players in the Glasgow Rangers squad have made more appearances than 18-year-old sensation, Mikey Moore, with the teenager having gone to a new level under the German’s watch.

During the Russell Martin regime, the promising Englishman started only six games, didn’t play a full 90 minutes once and registered only one assist, with all six of his Gers goals having come since the change in the dugout.

In 2026, in particular, the on-loan Tottenham Hotspur man has established himself as arguably his side’s “best player”, in the view of former Ibrox hero, Steven Naismith, having started each of the last seven Premiership games.

The clamour is building regarding a potential permanent stay ahead of the summer window, although there is no guarantee that Moore will be a Rangers player next season, particularly if the club’s recent loan history is anything to go by.

How Moore compares to previous Rangers loan signings

2025/26 represents yet another campaign when arguably the star attraction for the Glasgow side has come in the form of a loan arrival, with that having been a consistent theme of the past few years for the Light Blues.

In terms of pure output, Moore’s return of six goals and three assists doesn’t actually compare too favourably to those who came before him, albeit while not exactly telling the full story.

Last term, for instance, Vaclav Cerny netted 18 goals in all competitions, while registering a further nine assists in his solitary season at Ibrox, while the year prior, Abdallah Sima scored 16 times himself on loan from Brighton and Hove Albion, alongside contributing two assists.

2022/23, meanwhile, was the campaign of Malik Tillman, with the German-born United States international scoring 12 goals and providing five assists, following his arrival from Bayern Munich.

That said, considering his age, a fairer comparison might be to a then-teenage Amad Diallo, with the Ivorian joining in January 2022, albeit while going on to score just three times in 13 appearances, amid a muted impact under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Of that quartet of recent, notable loan signings, it is arguably Amad who has gone on to enjoy the biggest rise since then, however, now a mainstay at parent club Manchester United and deemed to be worth as much as €50m (£42m), as per Transfermarkt.

To see the diminutive talent blossom in recent years certainly doesn’t sting too greatly considering he was only a temporary fit at Rangers, with it far more regrettable to have lost one of their own in recent times.

Rangers have already offloaded a future “£50m+ winger” at Ibrox

The recent news that 16-year-old Kyle Glasgow has penned his first professional deal with the Light Blues was met with both delight and an element of surprise, with the teenage winger having stayed loyal to the club despite a raft of Premier League and European interest.

Rangers can forget signing Moore by unleashing their “answer to Leo Messi”

Rangers could move on from Mikey Moore by unleashing this Ibrox star in his place on the left wing.

The sad truth is – like in the case of Billy Gilmour, for example – that both Rangers and Celtic have had to witness similar talents being poached by English clubs over an extended period now.

That was certainly the case with regard to one-time academy sensation, Abedire Mebude, with the London-born winger having joined the Gers at the age of ten, before rising up the youth ranks alongside his older brother, Dapo.

At a similar juncture in his career to the aforementioned Glasgow, however, Mebude opted not to extend his stay in Scotland, instead rejecting a contract offer from the Ibrox side in order to join Premier League giants, Manchester City.

Like most, the now Scotland youth international didn’t get his chance at the Etihad at first-team level, although he was something of a revelation in academy football, scoring goals for fun in Manchester.

For City’s U18 side, he registered 34 goals and assists in just 30 recorded games, as per Transfermarkt, while also replicating that form at U21 level, with 26 goal involvements in 33 appearances.

A £1.65m deal to Belgian side Westerlo soon followed in the summer of 2023, although writing at the time, analyst and now Como scout Ben Mattinson predicted that Mebude would go on to be a “£50m+ winger” later down the line, describing him as a “sensational prospect”.

While he would go on to score just four goals in 36 senior games for the Pro League side, his recent switch to Turkey in January has proven particularly fruitful.

Like Moore the 21-year-old – who can operate on either flank – has been especially impressive in 2026 thus far, registering four goals and assists in his first seven Super Lig games for Caykur Rizespor.

He was described as looking “scarily good” in his City youth days by Mattinson, and that is finally beginning to be seen at senior level, with his total record of six goals and assists this term not too far behind Moore’s own return of nine.

A direct, dynamic dribbler who is comfortable in a variety of attacking roles, very much like Moore, Mebude is certainly one to keep an eye on over the coming years.

Indeed, if Mattinson’s £50m plus prediction does come true, this may feel like another frustrating tale of one that got away as far as Rangers are concerned.
