Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will head into their IPL 2026 opener against Mumbai Indians (MI) with a fair bit of uncertainty — especially around their overseas combination. A mix of injuries, delayed arrivals and a squad rebuild has made identifying the best four overseas players far from straightforward.

It remains to be seen whether the three-time champions take an experimental route early in the season, and the game against MI could reveal which direction they lean towards — opting for extra pace in the bowling department or additional batting firepower. The late arrival of key overseas pacer Matheesha Pathirana has added to the selection headache for the team management. The Sri Lankan is yet to join the squad due to injury concerns and clearance delays from the cricket board. The bowling unit is already weakened, with multiple Indian pacers ruled out, forcing the management to rethink the team balance.

As far as the three overseas slots are concerned, Finn Allen, Cameron Green and Sunil Narine appear certain to feature in the playing XI. For the fourth overseas option, the KKR management is considering adding more firepower to the batting department by including Tim Seifert. In that scenario, captain Ajinkya Rahane would move to No. 3, with Seifert opening alongside his compatriot.

Both Seifert and Allen were seen spending time with KKR power-hitting coach Andre Russell. The Jamaican shared his insights on clearing the ropes with the batters. The franchise posted a video on Instagram in which Russell was asked what he does for a living, to which he replied: “I teach people how to hit sixes.”

There is also a possibility that one among Rovman Powell and Blessing Muzarabani could feature at the Wankhede on Sunday. Powell can be used as a finisher and also offers a useful bowling option. With only Vaibhav Arora available as the frontline Indian pacer, it may not be a bad idea to utilise Cameron Green and Powell as additional bowling resources.

The team management is also considering handing a debut to Blessing Muzarabani. The tall Zimbabwean can generate bounce from the red-soil surface and potentially trouble MI’s power-packed batting line-up. In that case, the bowling attack would look stronger, with Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy spearheading the spin department.

Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah has joined the Mumbai Indians camp and is likely to play the season opener against KKR on Sunday, pending final confirmation. After undergoing a routine workload assessment at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru — where he bowled at full intensity — he is understood to be fit to lead the attack.

His return is crucial for MI, who struggled early last season in his absence but still managed a fourth-place finish. Meanwhile, Will Jacks (personal reasons) and Mitchell Santner (recent international duty) are yet to join the squad.

Both MI and KKR trained at the Wankhede on Friday, with another session scheduled on Saturday, where Bumrah’s participation will be closely monitored.

KKR’s likely playing XI: Ajinkya Rahane (C), Finn Allen, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Cameron Green, Rinku Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Rovman Powell/Blessing Muzarabani, Anukul Roy, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy and Vaibhav Arora.

Impact Sub: Karthik Tyagi, Umran Malik, Daksh Kamra, Tim Seifert.
