First words from new Bristol City manager Roy Hodgson with Gerhard Struber relieved of his duties

We check out the first words from new Bristol City manager Roy Hodgson with Gerhard Struber relieved of his duties.

Struber has been sacked, and in his replacement until the end of the 2025/26 season comes former England manager Roy Hodgson.

Hodgson has been out of management since leaving Crystal Palace in Feb 2024, but he returns to the touchline for the final seven games of Bristol City’s season. The sit 16th with 51 points from 39 games played.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Bristol City has appointed Roy Hodgson as Interim Head Coach after Gerhard Struber was relieved of his duties.

Former England Manager Hodgson will take charge of the men’s first team until the end of the season, while the club will task the incoming Sporting Director with appointing a permanent Head Coach for the 2026/27 campaign.

The club’s recent performances have not met expectations and therefore Struber and Assistant Head Coach Bernd Eibler will leave with immediate effect.

City Chief Executive Officer Charlie Boss said: “I would like to thank Gerhard and Bernd for their hard work over the past nine months and we wish them all the best.

“Roy’s appointment is about more than the results of the next seven games. Over the remainder of the season, he will help us set the standards and values at the club that we will need to be successful going forwards.

“Roy is a vastly experienced coach who has achieved and won at the highest level. He will support me, our players and our football staff as we build towards achieving our potential.

“We are in the process of appointing a Sporting Director who will have a direct input into the recruitment of a new permanent Head Coach.”

Hodgson will meet first team players and staff on Monday, March 30th when they return from the international break and prepare the team for the trip to Charlton Athletic on Friday, April 3rd.

Hodgson joins City following an illustrious managerial career in England and abroad, with a track record of success at both a domestic and international level. His last role was a return to Premier League side Crystal Palace – a side he had huge success with across two spells.

Hodgson said: “I have had great conversations with the Board and I am really excited by the opportunity to help until the end of the season. We will get straight to work and look for a positive performance on Good Friday.”

Alongside Hodgson’s appointment, Brian Tinnion has been relieved of his First Team responsibilities. He will now focus on the Academy Pathway ahead of the new Sporting Director conducting a full review of the club’s football operations.

Boss said: “Brian’s expertise is in player development and we feel he is best suited to working with our young players. Developing the talent in our Academy and ensuring there is a clear pathway to the first team is central to our plans.”

Interviews with Hodgson and Boss will be available on club channels on Monday evening.

Here’s the fan reaction after the first words from new Bristol City manager Roy Hodgson with Gerhard Struber relieved of his duties…

@RobinNestBCFC: Oh my god – am I in some sort of dream that I havent woken up from?

@_W00KS_: I saw this on a group chat a minute ago and thight it was a joke. Fucking hell man, this club.

@lpmoffatt: I feel for Gerhard Struber to be honest. Think of the start he had before injuries and key players being sold. Guardiola/Klopp/Ferguson couldn’t have got a tune out of our crop of ‘forwards’. Serious overhaul and investment needed @stephenlansdow1 – step up or step aside.

@oliibrs: Get fucked the lot of you.

@louiedun11: What the fuck, genuinely fuck this club top to bottom

@DaveSkinnerBC: I think this post was supposed to be for Wednesday next week, no?

@Richwfc2: Oh my days , the worst ever manager we have ever had , we have had a few ! the laziest, take the money bandit I have ever seen , what an earth are you doing down there ! He does about 2 hours a day if you lucky , a dinosaur were everything is everybody else’s fault never his 🤯

@JoshGrotzke: Struber hung out to dry and then this. Sack the board, fucking disgrace.

@markbennett1964: Right decision in my view. Hugely overrated by some of our fans and I look forward to a manager who utilises what we have rather than refusing to budge from playing wing backs even though other teams have ‘worked us out’

@LukeSummers1993: Absolute madness. Imagine being at the training ground last few months – spent all of January watching key players leave, all of Feb and March watching key players get injured, and then international break the manager gets the boot! Lovely work from the people at the top 😂😂😂

@RobinsTalk3: what the fuck

@AaronStill85: What the fuck do you expect when you sale all his best players & not replace them!!! Look how he had us playing at the start of the season with the squad, now plagued with injuries & you get rid of him!! Fuck this club & fuck the season ticket renewal 💩👎🏻 #ShitClub

@bcfc_harv24: wow genuinely one of the worst decision I’ve seen from this club ever

@OSIBPODMAG: Is now a good time to ask when season ticket information is coming out?

@AJHowler: So Lansdown can’t take criticism. Never has been able to. Latest fall guy. Fuck this club. I’m done with them after 40 years.

@eamer: Sell our better players, don’t allow the manager to invest in proven Championship quality and then blame the manager. John Lansdown and Brian Tinnion need to look a bit closer to home. There’s one consistent failure here, and they’re behind all of the failed attempts.
