Las Vegas — The Ultimate Fighting Championship has announced that former flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson will be inducted into the Modern Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026. The induction ceremony will take place this summer during the promotion’s annual International Fight Week celebrations.

Demetrious Johnson is the greatest flyweight of all-time,” said Dana White, President and CEO of the UFC. “Demetrious was a great champion who had one of the most incredible careers in MMA, and his streak of 11 consecutive title defenses is one of the most remarkable records we’ve ever seen in professional sports. It will be an honor to induct him into the UFC Hall of Fame this summer.”

Johnson becomes the 18th fighter inducted into the Modern Wing, a category that honors athletes who turned professional on or after November 17, 2000—the date of the first UFC event held under the unified rules of mixed martial arts.

A Record-Breaking Career

Over a 14-year professional career, Johnson compiled a remarkable 25-4-1 record (17-3-1 across the UFC and WEC). Widely regarded as one of the most technically skilled fighters in MMA history, he defeated numerous elite opponents, including:

  • Miguel Torres – former WEC bantamweight champion
  • Kyoji Horiguchi – former RIZIN flyweight champion
  • Henry Cejudo – former UFC flyweight and bantamweight champion
  • Yuya Wakamatsu – Pancrase flyweight tournament winner

Johnson first gained international recognition after joining the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion in 2010. Despite losing his debut to Brad Pickett, Johnson quickly rebounded with multiple victories, eventually earning a title opportunity against then-bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz.

The two met in the main event of UFC Live: Cruz vs Johnson in 2011, where Cruz retained his title via unanimous decision.

Becoming the First UFC Flyweight Champion

Johnson’s defining moment came in 2012 during the inaugural UFC flyweight tournament. After battling Ian McCall to a draw and defeating him in a rematch, Johnson advanced to face Joseph Benavidez at UFC 152.

The bout served as the co-main event of UFC 152, where Johnson secured a split decision victory, becoming the first UFC flyweight champion in history.

Historic Championship Run

Johnson’s reign would go on to become one of the most dominant championship runs in combat sports history. Over the next four years, he successfully defended his title 11 consecutive times, breaking the record for most consecutive title defenses in UFC history at the time.

His championship run finally ended on August 4, 2018, when Henry Cejudo defeated him via split decision at UFC 227.

Success Beyond the UFC

After departing the UFC, Johnson signed with ONE Championship, one of Asia’s premier MMA promotions. There, he continued his winning ways by capturing the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix and later becoming the ONE Flyweight World Champion, defending the belt once before retiring.

Johnson officially announced his retirement on May 5, 2023, vacating the title after his successful defense.

Career Achievements

Johnson enters the UFC Hall of Fame with an extraordinary list of accomplishments:

  • Longest title reign in UFC flyweight history: 2,142 days
  • Longest win streak in UFC flyweight history: 13 fights
  • Most flyweight title fight wins: 12
  • Most top control time in UFC flyweight history: 1:05:52
  • Highest significant strike accuracy in UFC flyweight history: 57.2%
  • Highest significant strike defense in UFC flyweight history: 68.4%
  • Third-most significant strikes landed in UFC flyweight history: 1,059

Throughout his career, Johnson also earned several prestigious awards, including Fighter of the Year in 2013 from FOX Sports and again in 2017 from ESPN and Sports Illustrated. He also received Submission of the Year honors in 2017 from the World MMA Awards, ESPN, and MMA Fighting.

Life Outside the Cage

Born in Parkland, Washington, Johnson excelled as a high school wrestler at Washington High School, placing second and third in the state during his junior and senior seasons.

After graduation, he initially trained in MMA as a hobby before transitioning into competition. Today, Johnson remains active in the martial arts community, competing in IBJJF Master divisions and continuing his passion for gaming and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

He currently resides in Washington with his wife and children.
