Alexa Grasso returned to the win column in devastating fashion Saturday night, knocking out Maycee Barber with a brutal left hand in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 271.

The former women’s flyweight champion needed just 2:42 of the opening round to knock out the surging contender, Barber, who entered the bout riding an impressive seven-fight winning streak. Grasso now holds two career victories over Barber, having previously won their first meeting by unanimous decision at UFC 258 in February 2021.

The fight began with both women finding their range, as Barber held the center of the Octagon while Grasso worked from the outside.

Barber spun to the mat, and Grasso immediately followed up with another punch then pounced on a rear-naked choke, but the strike had already rendered her opponent unconscious. Referee Mike Beltran stepped in to wave off the contest, ruling the finish a knockout.

The sequence is an early contender for KO of the year, though the exciting moment was halted by the worrisome damage Barber had sustained.

A Scary Moment and Classy Response

The aftermath created a tense scene inside Climate Pledge Arena, as Barber remained down for an extended period while the cageside physician checked on her.

Barber briefly came to and grabbed at the referee’s leg, appearing unaware that the fight had ended before going out again and lying motionless on her back.

Instead of celebrating, Grasso kneeled beside her opponent in a show of sportsmanship while medical staff attended to Barber. Barber eventually regained her bearings and was helped to her feet before the official result was read.

The victory marked Grasso’s first win since she captured the flyweight title with a stunning submission upset over Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 285 in March 2023. She entered Saturday’s contest on a two-fight skid, having lost a pair of decisions to Shevchenko and Natalia Silva.

For Barber, the loss snapped a seven-fight winning streak that had positioned her as one of the division’s top contenders. She had won every bout since her initial defeat to Grasso in 2021 .

Grasso Sets Sights on Mexico

During her post-fight interview inside the Octagon, Grasso did not call out a specific opponent. Instead, the Guadalajara native asked the UFC to bring an event to her hometown:

The request came after a performance that reminded everyone that the former champion remains a significant force in the flyweight division.

With the victory, Grasso positions herself for a potential path back to the title she once held. In her way, however, stands notable contenders Natalia Silva, whom Grasso lost to recently, and Manon Fiorot, both of whom are key figures in the title picture.
