Tonight’s UFC Seattle event was headlined by a highly anticipated middleweight matchup featuring Israel Adesanya taking on Joe Pyfer.
Adesanya (24-6 MMA) had entered this evening’s contest with hopes of snapping a three-fight losing skid. The promotion‘s former middleweight champion had most previously competed 13 months ago in Saudi Arabia, where he suffered a second-round TKO loss to Nassourdine Imavov (see that here). Prior to that, Izzy was coming off defeats to Dricus Du Plessis and Sean Strickland respectively.
Meanwhile, Joe Pyfer (16-3 MMA) came into tonight’s bout sporting a three-fight winning streak, with his most previous victory coming by way of submission over Abus Magomedov this past October at UFC 320. Prior to that triumph, ‘Bodybagz’ had earned wins over Kelvin Gastelum and Marc-Andre Barriault.
Tonight’s UFC Seattle headliner proved to be a wild back and forth affair. Israel Adesanya got off to a strong start in the opening round and appeared to have the lead leg of Joe Pyfer in all sorts of trouble. However, ‘Bodybagz’ took advantage of Izzy’s aggression and was able to score a big takedown and take full mount in round two. From there, Pyfer unleashed a plethora of ground and pound which ultimately led to the referee stoppage. It was an impressive win for the American, and a ‘what could have been’ loss for ‘Stylebender’.
