Selknam and Pampas Put on a Slobberknocker in Santiago

Selknam and Los Pampas put on a slobberknocker in Santiago on Saturday. The 80 minute contest went down to the wire with both teams in with an opportunity of coming out victorious. Ultimately, the winning side was the Buenos Aires team as Los Pampas won 34-31.

Selknam held a 24-19 lead at halftime. It was a half featuring six tries with both teams crossing three times. Los Pampas N8, Juan Pablo Bernasconi was the first to score. Bautista Farisé, whose goal-kicking accuracy was substandard in the match, successfully landed the conversion.

The Chilean side responded to the early score with a try under the posts. Outside center Domingo Saavedra split the defense and went over. Inside center, Matías Garafulic landed the simple conversion.

Selknam made it two tries in quick time as hooker Augusto Böhme scored his first of a double. Garafulic landed the conversion and added a penalty late in the opening quarter. Böhme then scored his second and Garafulic slotted the conversion for a 24-7 lead after 23 minutes.

Los Pampas rebounded and went on to outscore Selknam for the remainder of the match. Bernasconi scored his second try while a superb solo effort saw Santiago Pernas brushing off four tacklers to score in the right corner. With it, the deficit was down to five points at half-time.

Former Puma Santiago Cordero crossed in the left corner early on in the second-half. Selknam responded on 60 minutes with Marcelo Torrealba scoring a stereo-typical scrum-half try in the left corner. Then came a sensational finish from Agustín Fraga who continued his excellent rookie season for Los Pampas.

The scores were tied with the game into the final ten minutes. Farisé put the visitors ahead with a penalty six minute from full-time. Selknam were frustrated and unable to score again as Los Pampas saw out victory.

Both teams now have a week off next weekend as SRA pauses over the Easter Holiday weekend.
