Where there’s smoke, there’s probably a flare-up brewing: Manny Malhotra is suddenly the name you hear when teams talk coaching, and the whole Caleb-Malhotra angle gives this story a little extra sizzle.
Manny’s resume checks a lot of boxes. Sixteen NHL seasons, nearly 1,000 games, and a reputation as a reliable defensive center who played the dirty minutes. He’s the kind of guy his players would trust. He parlayed that into staff gigs in Vancouver and Toronto, then took the Abbotsford Canucks job in the AHL in 2024.
Abbotsford hasn’t been a power club on paper, but Malhotra’s two-year record there (66-60-10) with a thin roster shows he’s doing more than just coaching the basics. He’s on multiple radars around the league, per reports, and teams sniffing for fresh leadership are definitely watching.
There’s Also an Added Family Aspect to the Malhotra Connection
Now add the family wrinkle. Son Caleb Malhotra is the kind of prospect scouts drool over. He has dominant numbers in junior, and the chatter puts him in the lottery, maybe even the top five. Toronto’s pick situation is a key plot device: their first-rounder is only top-five protected.
If the Maple Leafs somehow keep it and Caleb’s still available, you can imagine the pitch: bring Manny in, draft Caleb, lock down a pair that fits club and culture. It’s borderline cinematic. Would that sway Manny? Maybe. Coaches care about fit and loyalty; being able to coach your kid and build around him is tempting. It’s a long shot, but it’s a storyline general managers will at least toy with.
Malhotra Will Have a Lot of Suitors for His Coaching Skills
Seattle, Vancouver, Edmonton, and other West teams are logical suitors, too. Malhotra’s AHL work and prior NHL assistant experience make him an easier transition candidate than someone with no pro coaching resume. Vancouver’s own struggles could open a door if they want to retool behind a coach who knows their system and players. Seattle’s recent moves and appetite for character hires could push them into the conversation as well.
Realistically, Manny might wait a season. He’s signed in Abbotsford through 2027. Interest in his services might grow. Teams with short leashes on current coaches could pounce now, but an NHL job that truly fits might require patience. The Caleb angle ups the intrigue, but it isn’t a slam-dunk motivator for clubs to hand Manny a gig; it’s more of a clever carrot that could make Toronto (or another team) try creative measures.
The Bottom Line for Malhotra and the Maple Leafs?
The bottom line for Malhotra is that there’s smoke for sure. Malhotra’s on the shortlist of believable first-time NHL head coaches, and the Caleb pick story gives teams a quirky, high-reward narrative to consider.
If you like drama with your hires, keep watching this one — it’s got all the parts to blow up into a real franchise-level decision. Maybe he follows the path Sheldon Keefe took when he was first hired by the Maple Leafs. The organization could do worse.
