Mario Ferraro would like to stay long-term in San Jose, but they may not be interested in that
NHL Rumour Report: David Pagnotta on the The Sheet with Jeff Marek on the San Jose Sharks pending UFA defenseman Mario Ferraro: “Mario Ferraro would like to stay, but I don’t think they’ve gotten to that point; I know when they had discussions it wasn’t of the long term variety; he wants long term; they were going mid to short; I don’t know if that changes now.”
A couple of college free agents the Minnesota Wild could be eyeing
Michael Russo and Joe Smith of The Athletic: The Minnesota Wild have interest in NCAA free agents Nathan Pilling (University of St. Thomas) and Owen Michaels (Western Michigan).
Pilling is a 21-year-old 6-foot-4 center who put up 29 points in 38 games. Micheals is a 23-year-old 6-foot-2 forward with 26 points in 36 games.
Will the Winnipeg Jets Look to do Something Significant This Offseason?
Could Auston Matthews head out West?
Howard Berger of Between the Posts: A good source throughout career sent an unsolicited text last week.
“Your favorite captain will be traded, this summer, to one of three western teams: Anaheim, Los Angeles or Utah. Mark it down. won’t be back with the Leafs.”
Matthews’ numbers have dipped in the past two seasons, and his current season is over due to knee surgery. He has a no-movement clause, but if he were to consider a move, he grew up in the Southwestern US, so a move back out that way would make sense. If the Maple Leafs were to trade him, they’d obviously prefer the West Conference.
Will the Maple Leafs search for a No. 2 center this offseason?
Luke Fox of Sportsnet: There seems to be talk outside the Toronto Maple Leafs organization once again that John Tavares needs to become their No. 3 center or shift over to the wing because of his lack of speed. The 35-year-old is second in goals (26) and only one behind Austin Matthews and second in points (61), trailing only William Nylander (67).
Maybe they could find someone a little younger, or a middle-six center who has more of a two-way game, like pending UFAs Charlie Coyle or Kevin Hayes.
The Kraken are Liking Bobby McMann, and Should the Vancouver Canucks overpay?
The cost to acquire and the competition to add someone like Robert Thomas (Blues) or Vincent Trocheck (Rangers) is going to be high.
