Both Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner completed the Sunshine Double at the Miami Open this weekend. Following their triumphs in Indian Wells, Sabalenka and Sinner lifted 1000-point trophies in Miami.
This is the fourth time in history that the Sunshine Double has been secured on both the ATP and WTA Tours in the same year. It previously happened in 1994 (Pete Sampras, Steffi Graf), 2005 (Roger Federer, Kim Clijsters), and 2016 (Novak Djokovic, Victoria Azarenka).
Sabalenka did not drop a single set in South Beach until Saturday’s final against Coco Gauff, whom the world No. 1 defeated 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. It was the exact same story in Indian Wells, where Sabalenka sprinted into the championship match with no sets lost before outlasting Elena Rybakina in a third-set tiebreaker.
For Sinner, the sunshine swing was nothing but total domination. In fact, the second-ranked Italian has won 34 consecutive sets at the Masters 1000 level dating back to the start of the Paris Masters last October.
Sinner finished off his march through the hard-court Masters 1000s with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jiri Lehecka on Sunday.
“It means a lot to me,” the 24-year-old assured. “(Winning) the Sunshine Double for the first time, it’s incredible. It’s something I never would’ve thought (to win) because it’s difficult to achieve. We made it somehow, so I’m very happy.”
