The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired general manager Brad Treliving. Changes were expected in the offseason, but the organization has decided not to wait, pulling the plug with just a handful of games left in the season. There is no immediate word on a replacement.
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment announced Monday the organization’s decision to part ways with Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brad Treliving.
They write in the statement:
“Throughout the course of this season, there has been deep analysis into both the current state of the Maple Leafs organization and the direction needed to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering a Stanley Cup championship to the city,” said MLSE President & CEO Keith Pelley. Pelley is scheduled to meet the media in Toronto tomorrow at 2 p.m.
“Brad Treliving is a man that we all have deep respect and appreciation for, both as a hockey executive and as a person, but it was determined that the club must chart a new course under different leadership. The organization is grateful for all that Brad has contributed in his nearly three years with the Maple Leafs and we wish him and his family the very best.”
TSN’s Darren Dreger hinted at this in a recent report when he noted, “If you’re Brad Treliving, you likely have a pretty good sense of what’s coming.” Of all the talk that a coaching change might be coming, Dreger said it seemed more likely that there would be a change in management, “Though we don’t know that for sure,” he adds.
Well, we know now.
Pierre LeBrun writes, “The Leafs will conduct a formal GM search. Hugely important off-season for the Leafs, to say the least. Getting going on GM search ASAP deemed important rather than wait another two-plus weeks for regular season to end before making the GM change. Treliving had one more year on his contract next season.”
