With the season now lost and the need for change being at an all-time high, Treliving’s firing marks the first in what is expected to be a multitude of turnover moves by the team in the coming weeks. It is certainly an abnormal move to fire someone this late into the regular season, but it speaks to the state of the situation the Leafs find themselves in.
We asked you on social media to share your thoughts on the Leafs moving on from Treliving, and here are some of the highlights.
The consensus among Leafs fans was that they were relieved that the Leafs finally ended the Treliving era before he could do more damage to the team. While he certainly had his bright spots during his nearly three years in charge, the majority of his body of work leaves a lot to be desired and is a major reason why the Leafs are now in disarray.
I was surprised he was given the trade deadline to attempt to tidy up his mess.
Given the tenuous state of his job status at the time, the decision to let Treliving run the trade deadline was a curious one now that we have the benefit of hindsight. He could have used that time to try to salvage some things by selling off some assets, but his returns left a lot to be desired.
That’s a start now fire the worst coach in hockey, Berube and his horrendous systems
With Treliving gone, the focus now shifts to head coach Craig Berube as his job status beyond this season is also in jeopardy. There is no indication at the time of filing whether or not he will be able to finish the season, but one can imagine that he soon could also be given the pink slip.
You may recall that the Leafs quickly scooped up Treliving not long after bizarrely firing Kyle Dubas in the summer of 2023. While some may have had reasons for optimism about a change in philosophy, there were also plenty of skeptics given how his tenure with the Calgary Flames went. Suffice it to say that the latter group was proven right in the end and that Brendan Shanahan made the wrong call.
Surprised they did it now, but they clearly have their eye on someone & don’t want to miss out
The name that has emerged as a potential successor to Treliving is the St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong, who is currently set to transition to president this summer. There will no doubt be plenty of other names that emerge in the weeks ahead, but the noise surrounding Armstrong has not gone away.
We want to hear from you: What are your thoughts on the Leafs’ decision to fire Brad Treliving?
