Cody Rhodes has predicted the outcome of his WrestleMania 42 championship match against Randy Orton by drawing a direct comparison to 2009, when Orton ultimately lost the WWE Championship to Triple H at WrestleMania 25.
On Busted Open Radio, Rhodes discussed how fans have been using Orton’s 2009 run as a benchmark for where his rival currently stands. Rather than dismissing the comparison, Rhodes acknowledged it and used it to point toward what he believes will happen on April 18.
“A lot of people have referenced 2009 Randy, where he just ate everything in his path and was vicious and took no prisoners,” Rhodes said. “And I was there. So being there, I got a firsthand view at what happened. You’re right. He was the most vicious he’d ever been. He was truly becoming the apex predator, the legend killer, the youngest world champion. All of that becomes an amalgamation into one. But he also went to WrestleMania, wrestled Triple H for this title and lost. And I think it’s a similar outcome going into WrestleMania 42.”
Rhodes also addressed what he feels separates his approach to being champion from Orton’s historical style. “The bell is who decides who the champion is,” Rhodes said. “When Roman had this historic reign, you got both. He was doing everything and then he was doing nothing, and we’d see him when we’d see him, and there was a specialness to it.”
Rhodes and Orton meet for the Undisputed WWE Championship in the Night 1 main event of WrestleMania 42 on April 18 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
