Maple Leafs CEO Keith Pelley says new GM choice ‘will be the most important decision I make’
“This will be the most important decision I make during my tenure at MLSE,” Pelley said during the press conference.
“I don’t believe that the current state of the team rests entirely on Brad’s shoulders, but after analysis throughout the entire year, including countless conversations with key personnel and hockey observers, I made the decision, supported by ownership, that the team must chart a new course under different leadership to achieve our ultimate championship goal.”
Pelley, who was named CEO of MLSE in January 2024, pointed out comments from those who believe he’s involved in hockey-related decisions.
“Let’s do away with that right now,” Pelley said. “I’m not here to be a scout. I’m not here to be a coach. I’m not here to be a general manager, and I have no desire on giving any input on who should play left wing. I am here to create the overall vision, the strategy, put the structure, put the process, put the pillars in place to develop the right culture for us to have a winning and a contending team year after year.”
The Maple Leafs certainly have one of the bigger budgets in the NHL, and Pelley noted how much the organization invests in hockey operations. However, without the right plans and people in place, winning can prove to be difficult.
“The team is blessed with the best resources in hockey. … We have all the resources to be successful. But without the right structure, without the right processes in place, without the right culture, without the alignment and the accountability among everybody inside the operation, we will not be successful. That change starts today.”
Pelley was asked about what the vision and strategy are for the team’s future.
“I think vision is pretty simple,” Pelley said. “That is to win. That’s the objective. The strategy is something that you can develop, but then you need to have the strategy aligned with everybody in the organization, and then the tactics come into play once you actually have somebody in charge of hockey operations. It just all can’t happen simultaneously.”
During the press conference, Pelley stated that the search for a new GM is ongoing, and that assistant general managers Brandon Pridham and Ryan Hardy will run the hockey operations side of things for the time being.
“The number one goal right now is for us to move as quick as we possibly can into an exhaustive search to put somebody in place to run hockey operations who will be able to make those decisions.”
Pelley recognized that there is an expectation that the Leafs push for success every year.
“The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the most storied franchise histories, and not only in hockey, but in all of sports. We must carry ourselves as such in every way. We owe that to our team, to our fans, and to everyone who has had a part of the club’s really rich history.”
