New faces earn national contracts

Cricket South Africa has announced the contracted squads for the Proteas Men and Proteas Women for the 2026/27 season.

The men’s squad consists of 18 contracted players, along with one hybrid contract, as the Test side continues its ICC World Test Championship title defence and the ODI team begins preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 on home soil.

There are a few new names in the mix, with Hollywoodbets Dolphins seamer Ottneil Baartman and Momentum Multiply Titans all-rounder Corbin Bosch both earning their first national contracts. They are joined by batters Matthew Breetzke of the Dafabet Warriors and Dewald Brevis from the Titans. Titans spinner Simon Harmer has been handed a hybrid contract.

A new addition this season is the introduction of Players of National Interest (PONIs), a group of Division 1 players identified as part of the national pipeline across formats, providing depth for international cricket and South Africa A tours.

On the women’s side, DP World Lions wicketkeeper-batter Karabo Meso has received her maiden national contract after featuring in all Proteas Women tours over the past year, including the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2026 in India.

Players who were previously contracted but are not included in this cycle remain eligible for selection for both bilateral series and ICC events.

Director of National Teams and High Performance, Enoch Nkwe, said: “These groups of players have been recognised for their performances and contributions over the past 12 months, while also taking into account the upcoming international schedule.

“With a busy and significant season ahead for both the men and women, it remains important that we continue building depth and strengthening our pipeline with PONIs, while remaining competitive at the highest level. We believe these groups give us a strong base to do that.”

Proteas Men’s Convenor of Selectors, Patrick Moroney, added: “Our Road to 2027 and Beyond strategy also informed the final choice of players who possess the level of talent and attitude required in achieving our strong ambitions of winning all major ICC events going forward.”

Proteas Women’s Convenor of Selectors, Clinton du Preez, said: “Contracts reflect a clear and deliberate focus on retaining a strong core of players who have driven the team’s recent performances and competitive progress. This approach ensures continuity, stability and sustained on-field standards, while reinforcing confidence in the current group. At the same time, there is a strategic commitment to building depth by creating opportunities for emerging players, ensuring the squad remains competitive, adaptable, and well-positioned for long-term success.”

The contracts will run from 01 June 2026 to 31 May 2027. During this period, the Proteas Men will host Australia, Bangladesh and England, while also touring Sri Lanka next year.

For the Proteas Women, the schedule is headlined by the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England in June, along with home tours against India and Australia later in the season.
