Shock has gripped the domestic game after Hohoe United took the drastic decision to withdraw from the Ghana Premier League with just seven matches left in the season.
The club reached the decision on April 1 following an emergency board and management meeting, bringing their debut top-flight campaign to a sudden halt.
Hohoe United sit in the bottom two with 30 points from 27 matches, already facing a difficult battle to avoid relegation. However, club officials believe their situation has been worsened significantly by a series of issues, including a disciplinary ruling they consider both harsh and poorly timed, as well as concerns over officiating and how their matches have been handled.
At the centre of the dispute is a three-match home ban imposed for failing to ensure adequate security during an earlier incident at the Hohoe Sports Stadium. The club are understood to be deeply frustrated that the sanction was handed down late in the campaign, at a point where every fixture carries heightened importance in the relegation fight.
Their grievance is rooted in the numbers. Of their 30 points, 20 have been secured at home, underlining how critical their home ground advantage has been. The ban, however, has effectively stripped them of that edge at a decisive stage of the season.
As things stand, Hohoe United would play only one of their remaining seven matches at their home venue, with six fixtures scheduled away from Hohoe, even in cases where they are nominally designated as the home side. Club officials argue this imbalance has severely undermined their chances of survival.
In addition, the club are unhappy with what they perceive as inconsistent officiating and the general handling of their matches throughout the campaign, further deepening their frustration during a difficult debut season.
Sources indicate the decision to withdraw has not yet been formally communicated to the Ghana Football Association. Should the club proceed with an official notification, they could face further sanctions under league regulations.
