Perhaps the Pittsburgh Steelers may need to have a backup quarterback plan in place in case Aaron Rodgers ends up joining a new team this offseason. While a return to the Steelers for a 22nd career NFL season was seemingly the likeliest option for Rodgers in terms of playing, there might be a new team that could be interested in his services.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the Denver Broncos have been talking about trying to bring in Rodgers to be their starter amid uncertainty around Bo Nix’s health.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Can’t Afford to Lose Aaron Rodgers

Here is what Florio wrote about the smoke between the Broncos and Rodgers that he heard about during the league meetings in Phoenix this week:

“There’s talk of the Broncos possibly bringing Rodgers in for a visit. The motivation comes from the possibility that current starter Bo Nix won’t be fully and completely back to 100 percent when Week 1 rolls around.”

Broncos fans remember Nix injuring his ankle in Denver’s divisional round win over the Buffalo Bills, which prevented him from playing in the AFC Championship game. But could his ankle injury really hold him out long enough for Denver to really consider bringing in Rodgers?

In any case, the Steelers cannot afford to lose Rodgers to another team. Last season, despite turning 42 years of age and battling a fractured wrist, the four-time MVP and Super Bowl MVP recorded 25 total touchdowns and just seven interceptions. He also posted his highest passer rating in five years (94.8).

His previous experience with new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy is also a reason for the franchise to want to bring him back. McCarthy helped Rodgers win the first two MVPs of his career, as well as a Super Bowl title, with the Green Bay Packers.

Aaron Rodgers Can Take the Steelers Further Beyond the Wildcard Round

Rodgers might be turning 43 this December, and his mobility may be diminishing, but he still proved in 2025 that he can lead the Steelers to contention. In the 16 games that he started last season for former head coach Mike Tomlin and Co., the team went 10-6 overall and 4-2 in the AFC North en route to winning the division for the first time in a half-decade.

That all was with a makeshift group of wide receivers and a struggling defense. This offseason, Steelers GM Omar Khan went out during free agency and traded for two-time 1,000-yard wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. He also signed back-to-back 1,000-yard running back Rico Dowdle, who was previously with McCarthy in Dallas.

Thanks to other notable moves on defense, the Steelers look like a stronger unit, and they still have 12 picks at their disposal in the upcoming NFL Draft. With a continued strong offseason and a return to Pittsburgh for Rodgers, the Steelers could be more than a dark-horse in the AFC in 2026.
