Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst is reportedly not he hot seat
The Green Bay Packers still have quite a few needs to address as the NFL offseason moves forward. With the 2026 NFL Draft right around the corner, fans are hoping to see the team plug some of those holes.
One major question mark the roster is facing right now comes at the quarterback position.
Malik Willis has been an elite backup behind Jordan Love over the last two years. Unfortunately, the Packers lost him to the Miami Dolphins in free agency. They need to find another quarterback who could step in and win football games if Love misses time.
In each of the last two years, Love has been forced out of some game action. Willis stepped in and played at a high level. Green Bay currently has Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord as their primary backup options.
Clearly, those two quarterbacks are not an ideal scenario if Love were to get injured. Kirk Cousins is a name that has been brought up as a possible target.
Packers Could Face Battle From NFC North Rival for Kirk Cousins
Gutekunst has been open about the Packers considering Cousins as an option. The longtime quarterback would be an excellent addition who could step in and play at a high level whenever his number is called.
Andrew Hughes of Detroit Jock City also believes that Cousins could make sense as a backup behind Jared Goff for the Detroit Lions.
“Even though (Teddy) Bridgewater has plenty of experience (65 career starts), his mobility is nowhere near where it was since a 2016 ACL tear with the Minnesota Vikings, further limiting his abilities at the position,” Hughes wrote.
“He was never a gunslinger, so athleticism always let him find guys on checkdowns. At this point, he’s a shell of what he used to be and hasn’t even started a game since 2022.”
Cousins Should Emerge as Green Bay’s Top QB Target
At the end of the day, Green Bay could not do better than signing Cousins. Adding an elite backup should be a priority for Gutekunst and the front office.
With that being said, the Packers should do their best to sign Cousins.
Last season with the Atlanta Falcons, the 37-year-old quarterback played in 10 games. He completed 61.7 percent of his pass attempts for 1,721 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Having that kind of an insurance policy on Love is a must. The last thing Green Bay needs is for the season to be over if Love suffers an injury. Cousins could keep the Packers afloat, even if Love was forced out of multiple games.
Expect to continue hearing rumors about Green Bay’s backup quarterback situation. Cousins has emerged as a legitimate target, but the Lions could be a team to watch as well.
