WHAT a night we had at BKB 52 – just like I said we would in last week’s column.
We saw history made and a fight of the year contender in Connecticut.
Julian Fernandez was the fighter making history as he became the first Mexican to win a BKB world championship.
He wears the super-cruiserweight belt after taking out Alex Wilson with a peach of a right hand in the opening round.
Cuba also has another world champion after Yampier Ramirez beat Ashley Williams – and how about Nicholas ‘Cub’ Hawkins-Jesse Ronson ?
What a fight that was !
After two rounds, it looked like the light-heavyweight belt was certain to change hands.
We knew Jesse was a puncher and he showed it in the second round.
He battered ‘Cub’ to the floor three times and Canada was on the brink of having its first BKB champion crowned.
But ‘Cub’ showed what champions are made of.
He came out for the third on his toes and then whipped in a fight-finishing right hook to keep his belt.
That fight had everything that was great about BKB. There was drama, courage and at the end, the fighter shook hands.
Nobody epitomizes the spirit of our sport better than James Connelly and that is why we were all so pleased that ‘The Truth’ put pen to paper on a new contract with us.
James has given us some of the best fights in BKB history since making his debut for us way back in November, 2018.
He’s fought everyone there is to fight in BKB and is one of only two fighters to put a dent in Lorawnt T ‘Smash’ Nelson.
‘Smash’ headlines BKB 53 later this month.
Mark Tiffin heads to New York looking to take the world middleweight title off the pound-for-pound star.
Also on April 17, Jarod Grant defends his world lightweight championship against Jon Barnard in a rematch.
That’s going to be another unforgettable night and then we move on to Manchester on May 16 for Paulie Malignaggi-Rolando Dy and a cracking undercard, so plenty to look
forward to for fans of the best combat sports promotion in the world !
