Sri Lanka fast bowler Nuwan Thushara has reportedly filed a case in the Colombo District Court against Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for denying him a no-objection certificate (NOC), which has delayed his participation in IPL 2026.
Thushara was denied the NOC as SLC cited his failure to meet new and stricter fitness standards, according to the court filing.
According to Newswire, Thushara argued that his contract with SLC ended on 31 March and that he had informed the board of his intention not to renew it and to step away from international cricket. The slingy fast bowler also claimed he had already been told he would not be considered for national selection, making the decision to deny him an NOC on fitness grounds difficult to justify.
Although Thushara highlighted the financial setback of missing the IPL, where he is part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru squad, the timing of his legal move has effectively ended his chances of featuring in this year’s tournament.
The case, which names SLC president Shammi Silva, secretary Bandula Dissanayake, treasurer Sujeewa Godaliyadda and CEO Ashley de Silva as respondents, is scheduled to be heard again on 9 April.
Under ICC rules, players must obtain an NOC from their home board to take part in overseas leagues, though the regulations do not lay down clear criteria for how such approvals should be granted or refused.
RCB are most likely to miss the services of Thushara as he pursues his legal battle. The defending champions are currently sweating on the fitness of their pace ace Josh Hazlewood. Apart from Thushara and Hazlewood, RCB have the option of Jacob Duffy, who delivered a Player of the Match performance in the season opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
