Golf Slang Explained: From ‘Shank’ to ‘Snowman’
Every sport has its own language, but golf takes it to another level. Spend five minutes in a clubhouse or on the tee box and you’ll hear words that sound more like nicknames for pets than part of a game. Shank, duck hook, snowman… what does it all mean?
If you’ve ever felt out of the loop, here’s a handy guide to some of golf’s most common (and colourful) slang terms.
Common Golf Slang You’ll Hear on the Course
- Shank – The dreaded mis-hit where the ball rockets off the hosel instead of the clubface. Usually followed by silence or groans.
- Duck Hook – A low, sharp hook shot that dives hard left (for a right-handed golfer). The stuff of nightmares off the tee.
- Snowman – Scoring an eight on a hole. Why snowman? Because the number 8 looks like a snowman!
- Chunk – When you hit the ground before the ball, taking a big divot and watching your shot go nowhere.
- Thin – The opposite of a chunk. You catch the ball too high on the clubface, sending it skimming low and long.
- Mulligan – A do-over. Officially, it doesn’t exist. Unofficially, it’s a friendly re-hit after a poor shot (especially on the first tee).
- Worm Burner – A shot that barely gets off the ground, skimming along the fairway. Bad for distance, entertaining to watch.
- Lip Out – When a putt circles the edge of the hole and cruelly refuses to drop. Heartbreaking.
- Sandbagger – A player who pretends to be worse than they are, only to suddenly play brilliantly when it matters (often in money games).
The Fun Side of Golf Language
Golf slang adds humour and humanity to the game. It softens the blow of a bad shot and gives us all something to laugh about together. After all, it’s easier to joke about making a “snowman” than to admit you just carded an eight.
Why It Matters
Understanding the slang not only helps you follow the banter but also makes you feel part of the community. Golf can seem intimidating at first, but once you know the lingo, you’re right there in the conversation — even if your swing still needs work.
The Bottom Line
Golf isn’t just about technique and tradition. It’s about shared stories, inside jokes, and yes, the occasional shank. Learning the slang gives you another way to enjoy the game, bond with your playing partners, and laugh off the rough patches.
