Indian-origin Ireland cricketer Simi Singh is fighting for his life with acute liver failure. The 36-year-old has represented the nation in 35 ODIs and 53 T20Is and is currently admitted to the ICU at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, India. Simi is on the waiting list for a lifesaving liver transplant, and his wife Agamdeep Kaur has selflessly agreed to donate part of her liver to save his life.

Born in Mohali, Punjab, Simi Singh started his cricket with the selection for the Punjab U-14 and U-17 teams. He failed to find a spot in the U-19 Punjab team. Singh then migrated to Ireland to continue further studies in hotel management in 2006. It was in Dublin that he started with Malahide Cricket Club, and his cricketing career took off from there making him an integral part of the Ireland national team. He has taken 39 ODI and 44 T20I wickets so far. Proving his skillset, he also scored an ODI century against South Africa in 2021.

Why did Ireland cricketer Simi come to India?

He started suffering from health problems about five to six months ago when he was in Dublin with a persistent fever. Despite illness, he was not diagnosed. Irish doctors could not find the cause despite multiple consultations. Finally, due to his deteriorating condition, his family brought Simi to India in June in the hope of getting him better medical treatment. Initially, he was treated at PGI Chandigarh where the doctors suspected tuberculosis and administered a course of anti-TB medicine. However, doctors rejected TB after six weeks of treatment.

By the end of the third week of August, his condition further deteriorated. It was because Simi was diagnosed with acute liver failure. The doctors have opined that there is apprehension about his slipping into a coma. They recommended his shifting to Medanta Hospital, Gurugram, where he is under critical care at the moment. His liver transplant will be scheduled when all the medical arrangements for the operation are complete. It is now necessary to keep Simi alive.
