Officially, Floyd Mayweather Jr. sports a perfect 50-0 record in professional boxing competition. If you ask his longtime rival Oscar De La Hoya, though, that record should actually stand at 49-1.
Mayweather, widely considered one of the best boxers of all time, has been back in the headlines in a major way lately. That’s because he has two exhibitions against Mike Tyson and Greek kickboxer Mike Zambidis coming up, and even more notably, a rematch with Manny Pacquiao in September.
Much like his first fight with Pacquiao, which went down in 2015, the rematch has already been the source of plenty of controversy. The latest drama occurred after Mayweather proclaimed the bout would be an exhibition, like his upcoming fights with Tyson and Zambidis. That clashes with earlier information — and apparently, his contract — which dictates the bout will be a professional fight.
It did not take long for De La Hoya to chime in on this drama. Speaking on Instagram, the boxer turned promoter called on Mayweather to put his perfect pro record on the line against Pacquiao. Perhaps more notably, he questioned whether that pro record should exist at all. As he has in the past, De La Hoya claimed he should have beaten Mayweather when they fought to a split decision in 2007. He also claimed Mayweather’s own father, Floyd Sr., admitted as much himself.
Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t consider Floyd Mayweather undefeated in boxing
“Mayweather, come on dude, fight a real fight,” De La Hoya said in an Instagram reel. “You are still trying to protect your 0? Yes, you are 50-0 on paper, but people know that you’ve lost. S**t, your own father said that you lost against me back when we fought.
“What’s crazy is that people don’t know we had a rematch clause for one year and what did you do? Your p***y a** retires for one year and one day.”
