Thomas Bearman Reflects on Karting Beginnings and First Steps into Competitive Motorsport

Moving from Karting to Cars: Why You Need a Plan

Like many young drivers, Thomas Bearman began his motorsport journey in karting at a young age. Those early years laid the foundation for his development, introducing him to the demands and rhythm of competitive racing while still keeping the experience rooted in enjoyment.

As his career has progressed, the environment around him has become more structured and intense. Training demands have increased, preparation has deepened, and expectations have grown with each step up the ladder. Even so, the early influence of karting continues to shape how he approaches racing, particularly in maintaining a balance between focus and enjoyment as the stakes rise.

In an exclusive interview with Pit Debrief just after his successful 2026 Formula Winter Series campaign with Van Amersfoort Racing, Bearman reflected on his early days in karting, emphasising how his love for motorsport and the “thrill of going quick” have shaped his approach to racing today.

Moving from Karting to Cars: Why You Need a Plan

Reigning F1 Academy champion Doriane Pin has been appointed a development driver for Peugeot and will sample the manufacturer’s 9X8 Hypercar in the FIA World Endurance Championship’s end-of-season Rookie Test.

“Joining Team Peugeot TotalEnergies as a development driver is a great source of pride for me,” said Pin. “Being able to contribute to the development of the Peugeot 9X8 represents a real opportunity. My goal is to learn as much as possible, fully integrate into the team, and bring my commitment and perspective to help contribute to the success of the project. It’s a big step toward my goals, and I’m determined to make the most of it with the ambition of becoming an official driver.”

Ex-F3 Ace Dufek Joins Race Academy for 2026 Season

Joshua Dufek will work as the driver coach for Renauer Motorsport new arrival Andreas Lo Bue at the Formelaustria Race Academy for the 2026 racing season.

“It’s great to be back at the track again, feel the racing atmosphere. Hence, I am grateful to Sepp (Renauer) and Harry (Miltner) for this opportunity. I have already been coaching Andreas (Lo Bue) a bit during the latest test in Slovakia and I am certain to be able to support him,” Dufek was all smiles.

For Renauer Motorsport team boss Sepp Renauer it is actually a reunion: “I have known Josh since his karting days, and we even did his first-ever single-seater test with him about seven or eight years ago. He is a very smart lad with great technical know-how and a lot of experience despite his young age. So, I am sure, he will be a great help to our youngsters.”

Academy director Harry Miltner, who had initiated the deal, added: “We are very happy to have such an experienced man aboard. I am sure, he will pass on valuable know-how to our talents for their development. Moreover, he has only just turned 21 himself, which means, he speaks their language perfectly.”

Andreas Lo Bue (Switzerland) and Tomas Rudokas (Lithuania) will drive for Renauer Motorsport – flying the Formelaustria Race Academy flag – in the 2026 F4 Central European Zone Championship. The season opens at the Red Bull Ring on April 10-12.

In June 2024, HM Sports, a sports consulting agency with over 20 years of experience in Formula 1, founded the Formelaustria Race Academy in partnership with Renauer Motorsport. Austria’s only professional junior driver academy supports karting talents and top sim racers in their transition to Formula 4 – and on their paths to becoming the next Formula 1 driver – while also giving active Formula 4 drivers the finishing touches. www.raceacademy.net

To the Non-Existent Karting Talent Scouts

Terence Dove takes on the task of advising you on why karting talent scouts are not what they appear to be. “I was actually asked this question by the f4 chap: ‘Do you know any drivers with money?’. Straight up, without caveats about being fast or anything else. That is how talent spotting is done, aside from the ‘academies’ which is another sales pitch. If there were real talent spotters worth their salt, you would see them at the end of long straights, watching braking.”
