The latest update from the Detroit Pistons suggests that Cade Cunningham could return before the regular season ends.

Cunningham has been upgraded to doubtful for tonight’s game in Orlando, according to The Athletic’s Hunter Patterson.

That’s a quicker recovery than expected after the team previously said he would be reevaluated in a week.

He has been out since March 17 after suffering a collapsed lung while diving for a loose ball against Washington.

The injury, officially diagnosed as a left lung pneumothorax, also ended his chances of qualifying for postseason awards.

Although he has played in 61 games, he would need five more appearances to be eligible, and Detroit only has four games remaining despite already securing the top seed in the East.

Even if he doesn’t return tonight, the expectation is that Cunningham could be back by Sunday’s regular-season finale, which would help him regain form ahead of the playoffs.

He is averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 assists, and 5.6 rebounds this season. The Pistons have held up well without him, going 8-2 during his absence.
