Banbridge Academy Crowned All-Ireland Champions After Thrilling Two Days Of Schoolgirls Hockey

Friday, March 20 – Armagh: Banbridge Academy were crowned All-Ireland Schoolgirls Champions following an outstanding 3-1 victory over hosts Royal School Armagh in the Kate Russell Final, bringing to a close two days of high-quality, fiercely contested hockey. Alongside them, Munster champions Scoil Mhuire claimed the Daphne Hall title with a narrow 3-2 win over Holy Child Killiney, ensuring the tournament showcased the very best of schoolgirls’ hockey across all provinces.

 

The competition began with eight teams split across two evenly matched pools, each side facing one another in a round-robin format to determine final standings. In Pool A, the opening morning set the tone for a tightly contested group. Royal School Armagh and Holy Child Killiney played out a thrilling 2-2 draw, with the hosts showing great resilience to come from behind twice. Crescent College and Loreto Kilkenny were equally well matched, sharing a scoreless draw. As the day progressed, Royal School Armagh moved into pole position with a commanding performance against Crescent College, scoring four goals to take control of the group, while Holy Child Killiney kept pace with a 2-0 win over Loreto Kilkenny, sitting just behind on goal difference heading into the final day.

Pool B proved just as competitive from the outset. Banbridge Academy opened with an impressive win over Wesley College, sealing the result with late goals, while Scoil Mhuire held off a determined Coláiste Iognáid comeback to record a 2-1 victory. The afternoon saw a pivotal clash between Banbridge and Scoil Mhuire, with the Munster side edging a tight contest 1-0 to go top of the group. Elsewhere, Wesley College and Coláiste Iognáid produced one of the games of the tournament in a five-goal thriller, with Wesley’s late winner keeping their hopes of reaching a final alive.

With everything to play for on Day 2, the final round of pool matches delivered decisive outcomes. In Pool A, Royal School Armagh confirmed their place in the Kate Russell Final with a composed 2-0 win over Loreto Kilkenny. Despite being stunned by Crescent College in their final outing, Holy Child Killiney held onto second place on goal difference, securing their place in the Daphne Hall Final. In Pool B, Banbridge Academy produced one of the standout performances of the tournament, defeating Coláiste Iognáid 5-0 to secure the goal difference required to top the group and set up a final showdown with Royal School Armagh. Although Wesley College recorded an impressive victory over Scoil Mhuire, the Munster side managed the scoreline effectively to remain in the top two and book their place in the Daphne Hall Final.

The finals provided a fitting conclusion to an excellent tournament. Scoil Mhuire showcased their quality in the Daphne Hall Final, racing into a 3-0 lead before withstanding a late surge from Holy Child Killiney to secure a 3-2 win. In the Kate Russell Final, Banbridge Academy made a blistering start, scoring twice in the opening quarter to take control. Royal School Armagh responded with determination, pushing forward relentlessly and pulling a goal back after withdrawing their goalkeeper with seven minutes remaining. However, Banbridge’s composure proved decisive, as they struck on the counterattack in the final minute to seal a 3-1 victory and the All-Ireland title.
