Dan Hurley’s Parting Message After UConn’s Loss Was Personal

If UConn’s loss wasn’t already tough for Dan Hurley to process, he now has to bid farewell to someone from his inner circle. Luke Murray’s departure had been decided before the Final Four, but the reality of his absence is only now starting to sink in.

UConn saw its bid for another national title slip away after a 69–63 defeat to Michigan. The game lived up to expectations with high-level competition, but Dusty May’s squad did enough to secure the Wolverines’ first championship since 1989. However, the loss also marks the end of an era for UConn’s coaching staff.

Murray, who has been with the Huskies since 2022, will now join Boston College immediately. During the postgame press conference, Hurley shared an emotional message. “Luke’s like a brother,” he said, before adding with a touch of humor, “We’re both very similar… we’re both bald.”

The UConn coach also reflected on their long-standing relationship, noting that Murray has been with him at nearly every stop in his career. Beyond their time in Connecticut, the duo previously worked together at Wagner and Rhode Island in the same respective roles.

Hurley further expressed confidence in Murray’s future, saying Boston College will experience a “renaissance in basketball.” He has long supported Murray’s pursuit of a head coaching opportunity.

While Hurley missed Murray’s introductory press conference, their bond remains strong which is why this feels personal. As Murray departs to build his own career, his absence will leave a significant void at UConn.
